Cannabutter (cannibutter, cannabudder, etc.) is cannabis-infused butter and is pretty straightforward and easy to make within the comfort of your own kitchen. This recipe is great for those making it for the first time as it doesn’t make a large batch as some other popular recipes do. This is ideal for those who want to try cannabutter for themselves to see if they like it and makes the perfect amount for perfecting a recipe and technique before making larger batches.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 Ounce Spent Material from Kief Thief or 1/4 Ounce Flower

  • 1 Cup Water

  • 1 Stick of Butter

  • Kief

Necessary Equipment

  • Medium Sized Saucepan

  • Wooden Spoon

  • Metal Strainer

  • Container with Lid

  • Refrigerator

Step 1: Decarboxylate Spent Material or Flower

Decarboxylation is the fancy chemistry term for activating the psychoactive components of marijuana. This process happens naturally when smoking or vaping and is a necessary step for creating cannabis infused products. You can read a lot more about decarboxylation, but the basics are pretty simple. Place your flower or spent material on a cooking sheet and place it in the oven between 30 minutes to an hour at anywhere between 220F and 240F (the lower the temperature, the longer you will want to leave your cannabis in the oven).

Step 2: Heat Water to Simmer in Saucepan

Don’t let the water boil, but you do want to see bubbles forming.

Step 3: Melt the Butter

Add the butter and occasionally stir until it is melted. You want there to be enough water and butter, so the flower never actually touches the saucepan but rests on top.

Step 4: Sprinkle in Material and Kief

After your flower or spent material has been decarboxylated, grind it up and slowly sprinkle it into the saucepan. You can also sprinkle in some kief if you’d like. Stir occasionally as you mix it in.

Step 5: Simmer for 45 Minutes while Stirring Occasionally

Make sure to keep an eye on your pan during this time and don’t let it boil. Make sure to stir it up around every five to ten minutes. This step is done once the mixture becomes thick and brown.

Step 6: Strain

Next, strain the mixture into a container. Make sure to use a spoon to press the dregs that collect at the bottom of the strainer to push all of the liquid into the container.

Step 7: Refrigerate Overnight

Seal your container with its lid and place it in the fridge overnight, and the cannabutter will solidify.

Step 8: Enjoy Responsibly

Your cannabutter is now ready for use. Test it out by spreading some on a piece of toast. If you plan on cooking with it, we recommend starting with small portions of the cannabutter complemented with regular butter until you better understand how strong it is.
